We're delighted to have kicked off 2009 with the launch of this amazing new nappy from those perpetual innovators over at Tots Bots.
It's unusual to see a great perfoming all-in-one, or a true one-size nappy, so to see an all-in-one one-size which performs in terms of absorbancy and fit, and which is easy-to-use, got us all very excited!
The thought that's gone into this nappy makes it one of the only all-in-ones that we've ever rated. One of the traditional problems with all-in-ones is that the seam where the fabric meets the wrap element can often "roll out" to allow the fabric to peep out. As soon as it comes into contact with any other fabric, water wicks out onto the other fabric, leading to wet clothes and bed clothes. Tots Bots have overcome this problem my creating a neat strip of fabric which is fastened well within the wrap. It is an inch away from the edge down the sides of the nappy, and just over that at the top of the front and back. This means the wrap will sit comfortably around the fabric, ensuring no leaks. Elastication at the back and sides of the nappy also ensure a secure fit.
The construction of the inner continues this ingenious design. This description is fairly convoluted, so we've illustrated it below to clarify! One full length is sewn in along half of it's length to the wrap element. (1) The remaining tongue is then doubled with another half-length of fabric sewn on. (2) Neither of these have the final width sewn up, which means that both at the point where the fabric meets the wrap, and where the fabric is doubled up, there is an open mouth which forms a pocket. On the tongue, this pocket accommodates another booster (which comes with the nappy), and this whole tongue then folds in to the remaining pocket (3). The advantages of this are several. Firstly, when all tucked in, the whole thing has several layers of fabric in a very neat strip - meaning less bulk for your baby. Secondly, when washing the whole thing unfolds, meaning the nappy is more thoroughly cleansed than with many traditional all-in-ones or pocket nappies, where the fabric doesn't unfold in the wash. Finally, the fact that it folds out means that it will dry much quicker too.
The outer has a choice of fabrics - from the white material from which the flexiwrap is made, to the funky colours of the rainbow patterned wraps. This one is the white flexiwrap material - which is unique in that it has more multiway stretch than any other wrap we stock, meaning a neater and therefore more leakproof fit. Likewise, the inner comes in a choice of bamboo or fluffle. This nappy uses fluffle - the revolutionary fabric which Tots Bots used in their nappy of the same name. This microterry has more than twice the absorbancy of a cotton terry, and is also beautifully soft to the touch. With antibacterial properties, it is really kind on your baby's skin. The one downside is that it's a more bulky fabric (which isn't so important in this nappy - as it is only a strip of fabric used), and if you prefer a slimmer fabric, the natural bamboo option might be more suitable for you.
As an all-in-one, this nappy integrates the absorbant fabric and the waterproof outer into one simple piece. Its all-in-one qualities make it a great nappy for anyone unsure about switching to real nappies - all of those people who look at the nappies, wraps, liners, boosters, fasteners etc, and think that it's all a bit too much for them. This also means that child-minders and nurseries as well as reluctant in-laws will be more easily persuaded to come to your way of thinking - with one piece, there's no extra work as compared to putting on a disposable, so fewer excuses not to use reusables! It's also great for being out and about, as changing is simpler and there are fewer pieces to carry around with you.
As a one-size, it grows with your baby and should fit most babies from birth to potty. Although it may be a little bulky on new borns, the one nappy should see you all the way through, which means that both choosing and paying for your nappies is a simpler affair. Compared with Size 1 and 2 nappies and wraps, which would cost you roughly £35 for all 4 pieces, this nappy costs £14.99. The downside is that they will get used a lot more so may not last to a second child, but even accounting for this, the cost per usage is much lower.

the fluffle inner might look and feel soft but is nowhere near as absorbant as the thick man-made bamboo alternative of my other easyfits.

Although i love Tots Bots, ive found with all my V1 nappies they all leak quite quick, i always make sure they are fitted on my daughter properly and that there are no gaps around the legs but after one hour or even less she is soaking through :( inside the nappy is very soft and fluffy but defo not absorbent and i dont think its able to soak up the wee quick enough, therefore leading to leaks, we had leaks from the leg elastic and up the back and when i felt inside it was only slightly damp on top and even the booster that included with the V1's wasnt even wet at all, whereas the new V2 easyfits have bamboo which is alot more absorbent. Even with different branded inserts as we tried different ways to make these work this was no use as the actual inside that comes into contact with your baby doesnt absorb at all :( The nappy is very quick drying but no good if it doesnt do the job its designed for, and when soiled the poo clogs up the fluffy inside making cleaning abit more difficult. Defo go for the new V2 easyfits instead they are FAB, 110% better in everyway and now my fav nappy, well done Tots Bots :)

Not great at all! Cute to look at, but outer fabric feels "cheap". Inner liner/booster feels lovely and soft, but has to be stuffed "just so" to fit properly. LEAKS!!! I have used this on only a newborn, so leaking should NOT be a problem yet, but it has leaked every time he's worn it! The convenience of having it all in one does NOT outweigh the fact that he gets his clothes soaked when he wears this...cute but not good. Clean Green Nappy says: with any one-size nappies the fit actually gets better, so the fact that you're using it on a newborn may be the problem - the optimum fit is from about 12lbs and up.

leaks at sides, poppers come open when fitting, not enough poppers to have a range of sizes

It's a good idea, would benefit from a double gusset I think as elastic around leg is not tight enough = leaks (both wee and poo). Been using mother-ease wraps over the top which stops the leaks but it kind of beats the purpose of an all-in-one nappy. It's a lot of money for a product that does not work. Might as well have bought the separate cloth nappies and wraps :((

Looks good and fits well, even on a small baby. Quick drying. Mine has leaked several times though as no seperate wrap.

These felt wonderful and fluffy inside but the outer shell is quite a thick waterproof and aas my daughter has slim legs I can't tighten it enough to stop it leaking out of the sides especially is she pees when I am breast feeding. Most of it is quick to dry apart from the pad in the middle which can be difficult to put into place if you have large hands. All in all a disappointment.
