We're delighted to offer this eco-disposable nappy. An ideal nappy for busy parents who want to do their best for the environment, you can use the Moltex Öko as a full-time option, or as an emergency measure alongside your real nappies - for those times where you can't wash your nappies. They're ideal for travel and holidays or for busy times when the nappy pail is just a bit full!

The nappies are at least as effective as the leading conventional brands with excellent absorbency - which means that parents can use the disposables without feeling guilty about the environmental impact of conventional disposables, and the potential health impact that many of the chemicals and processes used in their manufacturing can have on their baby.

  • Made from more than 50% biodegradable materials
  • The absorbent core is 100% chlorine free
  • The protective backsheet is breathable and 100% biodegradable
  • The super-soft topsheet contains 40% renewable materials
  • The fastening system is elasticated and re-closable for a perfect fit
  • Dermatologically tested and proven friendly to the skin
  • Free from natural latex and perfume

FAQs

1 Is the nappy 100% chlorine free?
The absorbent core of the nappy is 100% chlorine free. In addition the nappy is made from fibres which are bleached without the use of chlorine. Instead an environmentally-friendly oxygen process is used, minimising pollution.  There are therefore no harmful residues from chemical processes to harm your baby.
2 Is the Öko made from sustainable resources?
The raw materials come from 100% certified sustainable resources. All timber from which the fibres derive are cultivated naturally in locations to which they are indigenous. Growers protect local ecosystems and endangered animals and plant species.
 3  Is the nappy breathable?
The outer layer of the Moltex Öko is a 100% biodegradable, breathable film. With tiny pores the layer allows for moisture and heat from inside the nappy to evaporate into the air, ensuring a dry and cool environment inside the nappy.
 4 What about latex?
The Moltex Öko does not contain any natural latex. This product, found in many nappies, contains proteins and can cause allergies.
 5 No lotions or perfumes

Most conventional disposables contain perfumes to mask the unpleasant odour which the combination of urine and the chlorine  bleaching process in the nappies creates. As Moltex Öko nappies are bleached using a chemical-free process, they do not need these perfumes, which are particularly harsh against babies sensitive skin.

In addition, they do not use lotions, which after prolonged exposure to babies skin, can be harmful. And because they do not use lotions, they do not need the harmful antioxidants which are added to them as a preservative.

6 No TBTs

TBT (tributyl tin) is an environmental pollutant with a hormone-like effect. The smallest concentrations of TBT can harm people's immune systems and impair their hormonal system.

In 2000 Greenpeace carried out tests which showed that Moltex Ökos are one of a few nappies which don't contain TBTs. "Unfortunately, TBT-free nappies are a rarity," said Greenpeace toxics expert Thilo Maack.

7 Are there any additives used in the nappies?

The only thing added to the nappies is tea leaf extract which is completely natural and helps eliminate odours in the nappy. In addition it is anti-fungal and has proven effective in protecting against viruses and yeast, and contains vitamins A, B and C.

8 Is the Moltex tried and tested?

Comprehensive tests have shown that the Moltex Öko nappy is kind and gentle on baby's skin.

9 Does Moltex Öko contain absorbent gel

Yes, it does - and this is synthetic. In consumer panel tests, Moltex found that nappies without absorbent gel at the core (which use cellulose to absorb moisture) have a consumption rate which is 3 to 5 times more than those with. This means that although entirely biodegradable, the wastage of all the parts of the nappy mean that they are not necessarily more environmentally friendly, and Moltex believes that it is environmentally beneficial to replace a part of the cellulose with the absorbent gel.

This is also important in terms of your baby's health. Urine in the nappy goes through a biological transformation during which urea changes into ammonia and carbon dioxide, and this means that the pH of the liquid becomes alkaline (with a pH of 9-9.2), which drastically increases the risk of skin irritation, often resulting in nappy rash.

Moltex has subjected the gel to stringent examination to ascertain that they are not harmful to baby's skin. The studies show that there is no danger of health risk from the gel.

10 What about the packaging?

The Moltex Öko nappy is packaged in a biodegradable bag which is made partly from starch from renewable raw materials. The bag is fully recyclable, either through your household collection, and fully compostable.

11 How can Moltex guarantee the raw materials in their nappies are not harmful for my baby?

All raw materials conform to German guidelines as well as FDA recommendations.

The purity levels are audited by external laboratories on a regular basis by independent experts.

We use washable nappies most of the time but when we're away from home for more than a day we tend to use disposables. These were the most biodegradeable nappies we could find around 5 years ago when we were looking for disposables to compliment the washables, not sure if this is still the case. We're very happy with them though. Very little leaking, they don't smell and the children appear to be comfortable in them. They are a little on the exensive side but this is balanced about by the money we have saved using washables.

Generally very good - but sometimes leak wee, especially overnight when The Oogy likes to gush! Overall, excellent though.
