About Us

We are a couple of first time parents, and we set up The Clean Green Nappy Machine as we couldn't find an online shop which provided an efficient service and clear information about real nappies.  With a two month old daughter, we were keen to switch to an environmentally friendly option, but really didn't know where to start.  I remembered, aged 10, helping my mum change my little brother's nappies, and dealing with huge terry squares and the cumbersome 'kite fold'.  Bunching this all up into a safety pin, and hoping for the best.

When we finally tried some samples of real nappies, we realised it couldn't be easier.  The new generation are soft and comfortable for your baby to wear, easy to put on, store, and wash, and we still haven't had any little leakage problems!

Add that to the savings you make from not having to spend up to £20 per week on disposables, and the benefits of using real nappies really start to add up.  An initial outlay can be from as low as around £200, compared to an average of £500 per year if your baby is in disposables.  Many nappies are so durable, they can be used for up to four children, and the huge market in second hand real nappies on ebay is testament to the fact that they do not drop significantly in value.  And to make it even more financially viable, some Local Authorities offer an incentive scheme to help you get started - with a payment on receipt of evidence from you that you are using real nappies.

The impact of disposable nappies on our already fragile environment is potentially devastating. All disposables, whether 'green' or not, are put into landfill sites when collected by the council, so even if they claim to be partially or wholy biodegradeable, they will not be given the opportunity to breakdown in landfill. On partially degradeable disposables, the part of the nappy which is not biodegradeable is the 'dessicant' - which is a chemical-filled gel which absorbs moisture.  This is the most damaging part of any nappy, and there are few, if any, disposables marketed in this country which do not contain some form of this ingredient.

As a mother, and someone who tries to contribute in some small part to help stem the tide of ecological destruction, I would not now be happy to use disposable nappies.  Our rubbish has reduced by almost half since we swtiched, and I would happily recommend real nappies to anyone who is concerned about the impact of having a child on the environment.

Finally, if you find choosing from the products on this site in any way daunting - don't know which nippas go with which nappy, or which prefold with which wrap - please do not hesitate to email or phone.  Part of our motivation in setting up this shop was to provide clear and easy advice, and we are happy to talk through any aspect of the products before you purchase (and even if you decide not to just yet!)

Our guarantee:  All nappies on this site are tested first by our group of babies and parents - and nothing that causes discomfort to the babies, (or difficulty to the parents!) will be marketed here.
